Mitsubishi Motors also ranked highest among all industry brands in overall value, earning ASG’s 2019 BEST ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE BRAND Award. In addition to its industry leading performance, Mitsubishi produces four award winning models: the 2019 Outlander and Outlander PHEV in the Mid-size SUV segment, the 2019 Outlander Sport in the Compact Crossover segment and the 2019 Mirage in the compact car segment. Mitsubishi delivers a versatile, well-rounded award winning line-up in 2019.

ASG’s economic performance assessment found the Mitsubishi Motors lineup to offer the best value across any industry brand in 2019, considering purchase and operating costs across the first 6.5 years of vehicle ownership (87,594 miles, the average time and vehicles miles traveled for a new car buyer). Mitsubishi Motors offers the best value in 2019, outperforming the average industry brand by 27%.

Mitsubishi edged out the competition and sealed ASG’s 2019 BEST ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE BRAND Award with the notable Mitsubishi Mirage, which holds the best economic performance of any model year 2019 vehicle, according to ASG’s 2019 Study.

Mitsubishi outperformed all 32 brands assessed in ASG’s 2019 study, besting the average 2019 brand by 17 percentage points to offer the best all-around performance - environmental, social and economic.

ASG’s annual study found the 2019 Mitsubishi Mirage to hold the best economic performance of any model year 2019 vehicle, earning the distinguished BEST ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE Award. In ASG’s data-driven automotive assessment, the Mirage not only won its class, but also outperformed all 1,640 (trim variants) vehicles assessed for model year 2019. The 2019 Mirage offers the best value, with the lowest purchase and operating costs of any car, crossover or SUV.

In ASG’s all-around performance assessment – the combined environmental, social and economic performance analysis - the Mirage furthered its winnings to earn the BEST ALL-AROUND PERFORMANCE Award. The Mirage outperformed 335 conventional and alternatively powered vehicles in the compact car segments to earn the distinguished honor.

ASG also notes that the Mirage earned the best environmental performance rating of any conventional powered car in 2019, thanks to its engineered light weight design and stellar fuel economy, which is the industry best of any conventional powered vehicle at 39 MPG combined.

The Mitsubishi Outlander and Outlander PHEV were among the best 5 SUVs assessed in ASG’s 2019 Study, with the Outlander taking the top honor as ASG’s BEST ALL-AROUND PERFORMANCE SUV of 2019. The Outlander, with 7 passenger capabilities and with an EPA estimated 30 MPG highway (25 city/30 hwy/27 combined), outshines competitors of comparable size, revealing new possibilities for fuel economy gains and reduced fuel costs in the SUV segments.

The Outlander PHEV, with a 22-mile all electric driving range and EPA estimated 74 MPG-e, leverages the increasingly cleaner U.S. power grid as a fuel source, to significantly increase the environmental benefits of the plug-in SUV powertrain in 2019, and across future years, earning ASG’s 2019 BEST 5 ALL-AROUND PERFORMANCE Award for the second consecutive year.

The Outlander Sport also took home the BEST 5 ALL-AROUND PERFORMANCE Award in the Crossover segment, a hyper-competitive group of 419 vehicles.

The Automotive Performance Index (API) applies statistical methods to demonstrate each vehicle rating in relative comparison. For example, the vehicle that performs highest in environment performance in a given class obtains a rating score of 100. Each vehicle in its class is then compared relative to the top-performing vehicle with a rating score reflecting the statistical difference in performance outcomes. A score of 91 translates to a 9% environmental performance deficit as compared to the top-performing vehicle.

Due to the API’s relative vehicle rating method, vehicle class divisions were identified as a critical input - these class divisions are detailed here.

While the Automotive Performance Index is indeed an exhaustive list of vehicles to trim level detail, with each vehicle assessment reporting over 200 unique data outputs (the culmination of thousands of data inputs), ASG has taken additional measures to ease the burden of sorting through all data points and all vehicle assessments. We have developed key performance categories and sorted all vehicles in each class according to Environmental Performance, Social Performance, Economic Performance and All-Around Performance. The vehicle in each class with the best score in each unique category is named the performance award winner (i.e. Best Environmental Performance Award winner). The vehicle in each class that scores highest combined scores in Environmental Performance, Social Performance and Economic Performance is named the ASG Best All-Around Performance Award winner.

One step further, we also name the Best 5 All-Around Performance Award winners in each class to provide consumers with a concise product comparison guide.
